Legislative deliberation is fake, political theater. Sortition bodies - well-designed groups of randomly selected people - succeed at deliberation where politicians fail because randomly selected groups are free to change their minds, know they have lots to learn, and have much more demographic, cognitive, and experiential diversity than elected legislatures.
Terry Bouricius is a former legislator and election reform policy analyst who advocates for replacing elections with sortition: short-term, representative random samples of everyday people, empowered to bypass politicians and decide political issues themselves after cross-examining experts and deliberating together.
